An elephant, without its permission was enlisted to be part of a wedding ceremony in Prayagraj, India. But it was not foreseen that the sounds of the festive firecrackers would make the elephant cranky.
The incident happened on the night of June 11 when the groom and his baraat (celebratory wedding procession and elephant) made the trip from Amlapur village in Prayagraj, to the wedding venue which took place at Naryanpur village.
As they arrived, some people decided to welcome them by throwing firecrackers. The elephant became startled and probably got frightened and began to destroy everything in sight. Pandemonium struck as the elephant picked up a car with its trunk and flinged it like a box of matches.
Meanwhile, everyone close to the demolishing elephant was running helter-skelter. The elephant went ahead to topple more cars, and destroyed the wedding pandal (a temporary structure erected for ceremonies).
Two government units had to be called to control the animal; the forest department and the police. They rushed to the venue, which now looked like a mini war zone. They were able to restrain the animal, and bring it to order. Snippets of the incident made way to social media, and several people are condemning the groom’s action, calling it cruelty to the animal.
