Vanessa Reiser; a New York therapist decided to raise awareness on narcissistic domestic abuse in a dazzling but flamboyant fashion. The 47 year old woman who resides in Congers, New York determined to run 285 miles from Oswego, N.Y to J. Hood Wright Park, N.Y in twelve days to raise awareness about narcissistic abusive relationships.
On May 17th, Vanessa donned on a $3,500 bridal dress from Lovely Bride in Manhattan specially designed for her first one-woman run at 9 A.M, and completed the look with a pair of white trainers.
Vanessa is a psychotherapist who has seen hundreds of women abused. She has also been a victim of abusive relationships, as she was married for eight years in 1988, remarried in 2013 for five years, and in July 2020, she broke off her engagement with a man she called ‘narcissistic abuser.’
“But I’m a strong girl. Once I got away and got my power back, I turned a corner. I’m proud to say that strong girl never left.”
This experience spurred her into raising awareness about narcissistic abuse, so she decided to run in a wedding dress to get people’s attention. Vanessa is a two-time Ironman triathlon competitor. While jogging near her home sometimes ago, she received an inspiration to create this awareness by running in a wedding dress.
“The white dress is a symbol of a fantasy,” Vanessa said. “In our culture, it represents a commitment we are brought up to think completes us. Narcissistic abusers use this to exploit women. I’m hoping when women see me run past them in the dress, they will feel empowered. If they are in an abusive relationship, I hope they gain clarity, courage and confidence to move away from it.”
For each of the nine counties Vanessa ran through, a donation would be made to a local domestic abuse shelter.
Vanessa has managed to recreate herself from her life experiences; she owns a psychotherapist firm where she attends to more than 300 clients, specializing in narcissistic abuse. Vanessa is also a co-founder of Monarchs Coaching; a life-coaching program.
