How far can you go when you are motivated? For Rachel Jones, she can go as far as losing over 60kg in just 6 months, to fit into a bridal train.
Miss Jones is a 35 year old Nantwich youth worker, and she was asked by her friend to be her bridesmaid in January of 2019, for a wedding that was to take place in August. She had always wanted to work on her weight; she was a size 28, but did not have enough motivation to do it, but here comes the perfect opportunity for her to harness her fear of being the “fat bridesmaid” according to Rachel, “among other slim and beautiful bridesmaids”. She said that she was really grateful that her friend considered her for the role on her special day but she did not want to be part of the bridesmaids the way she was, and determined to shed some weights before the big day. She even resolved that if she did not attain her weight goals, she will decline on the request.
Rachel Jones has not always been a size 28, she used to work in the children and youth ministry, as a nursery deputy manager, being a graduate of theology. According to Rachel, she started putting on weight after passing her driving test; she stopped walking as much as she used to. She also stated that she was in a happy relationship and she was comfortable.
Things went sour with Rachel’s relationship, and on top of that she had a number of bereavements. These tragic episodes made her find solace in “comfort eating”.
Rachel who is a natural red head, was bullied for her hair color at school and this made her have a low opinion of herself.
Rachel works at Elim Church in Nantwich, recounting her daily meal plan; “I always had bran flakes for breakfast” and for mid-morning snacks, she had crisps and chocolate. For lunch, she had sandwich and sausage rolls which almost always went with another round of crisps and chocolate.
For tea, she ate pizza or a lot of pasta with Bolognese sauce or chicken in breadcrumbs and chips not forgetting crisps and chocolate alongside sometimes.
At some point in Rachel’s life, while her faith grew, she paid more attention to her mental health, however, her physical health suffered, she never felt the need to take care of her physical health until she received the invitation to be a bridesmaid and felt like she was not in the right physical state to take on this job.
When she received the invitation, she thought about being seen by everybody in the wedding photos which, according to her, “will be forever”
Her transformation began when she joined Slimming World and lost 63.5kg in 6 months.
“I carried on losing weight and I feel amazing – I’ve never been as fit in my life.”
Her current meal plan includes branflakes for breakfast which sometimes go with strawberries, and for lunch, she has chicken and salad. Her tea accompaniments remained the same, except that the Bolognese sauce is now made from scratch. In addition, she walks five miles every weekday and seven miles on Saturdays.
Rachel is now a size 12. “I look at myself in the mirror and say to myself, I have done it!” says Rachel. She gave out all her old clothes but kept her old jeans of which all of her can fit into one leg now, to serve as a reminder of how far she had come.
Rachel’s story is only a reminder that we can achieve whatever we set out to do if we truly make up our mind.
