Ever heard of a police station wedding between two persons who were not prisoners? Well, here is one:
It was an unusual turn of events for an Indian couple, as the cops in Ramchandra Mission police station in Uttar Pradesh’s Shahjahanpur saved and successfully conducted a marriage that had been called off, following heated arguments and quarrels by relatives which turned into a commotion and forced the marriage to be halted.
According to the police report published in the Hindustan Times, the marriage ceremony of Kamlesh Verma, 23 and Kranti Verma, 22 was cut short when a ruckus, which started with arguments from drunk relatives could not be curtailed and the intensity of the situation called for the abrupt shutdown of the ceremony.
The groom, disappointed and angry, went back home with some of his friends, while the fathers of the bride and groom decided to take the case further to the police by lodging complaints about each other’s relatives. Their complaints were attended to, by Station House Officer (SHO) Sanjay Kumar, who, after listening to the story of a marriage being called off over arguments by some drunk relatives, offered to help them reinstate the ceremony if they agreed, a request which they did not bail out on.
After series of reconciliation and apologies from both parents, it was suggested by the groom’s father that the marriage should take place at a neutral venue because going back to the bride’s village will be “opening up old wounds”. This seemed to please both parties, and what other venue could be more neutral than the police station’s premises? which also housed a temple. Straightaway, the SHO went to work to make the police temple conducive enough for the ceremony to take place.
The groom was contacted to come to the station, the bride was also called for. She came along with the priest and a few family members, all escorted by the police. After the whole arrangements, the ceremony kicked off again at 2 am and altogether, there were 20 persons in attendance, including family members and police personnel, who wished the couple a happy married life and gave them their blessings.
